Where you eat

Galley

One kitchen at the back of the ground floor, six tables, and a hatch you can lean on while the coffee comes. Breakfast is included. Everything else is cheap and optional.

The early breakfast is not a gimmick. Half the quay is at work by six and the kitchen has always run to that clock. If you want to sleep instead, everything except the eggs is still out at ten.

What gets cooked

Breakfast is bread from the five o'clock bake, boiled eggs, cured fish, cheese, porridge with brown butter, stewed fruit, and coffee that is strong by default. Nothing arrives on a tiered stand.

The evening pot changes daily and is written on the board by four. Fish soup twice a week, root vegetable and barley when it turns cold, lentils and greens on the days the market disappoints. One pot, one price, bread included, and a second bowl if you want it.

The night counter is the part guests remember. Cheese, cold potatoes, pickles, rye, and a tea urn, left out from nine until two. Come back from the strip at midnight and there is something to eat without waking anyone.

We do not pretend to compete with the restaurants two streets away, and we will happily point you at the good ones. Some evenings it is better to eat out and come back for the counter.

Tell us about allergies and dietary needs when you book rather than on the night. With a day's notice the kitchen can adapt almost anything; with ten minutes it cannot.
