Two streets back from the water

A narrow house on a working quay

Fourteen rooms behind a grey stone front, a galley kitchen that opens early, a salt room in the cellar, and a very quiet card room on the top floor for guests over eighteen.

The idea

Close enough to walk, far enough to sleep

This was a ship chandler's house, then a boarding house for crews, and now fourteen rooms with decent beds and thick shutters. The stone is a metre deep at the base, which is why a street this busy sounds so far away once the door shuts.

Most people who write to us are planning casino city breaks — a couple of nights, one big evening out, and no interest in driving anywhere. The strip starts at the end of our street, so nobody here needs a taxi at two in the morning.

We are a small house with a small staff. There is no concierge desk, no spa menu, and no packages. Someone answers the door, someone cooks, and someone knows the tram timetable by heart.

Good casino travel is mostly logistics, and this house is built to remove them. You arrive, you walk everywhere, and you sleep properly in between.

How nights work

How long to stay

Two nights, three nights, or a week

Two nights is the common shape. Arrive in the afternoon, take one long evening on the strip, keep the second evening short, and leave after a slow breakfast. Most casino short stays we host look exactly like that.

Three nights is better if you want the city as well as the strip. It gives you a full day for the harbour museum, the island ferry, and the market without cutting anything.

A week changes the character of the trip entirely. Guests on longer casino vacations tend to go out twice, not six times, and spend the rest of the time reading in the galley and walking the sea wall. That is usually the version people repeat the following year.

The best casino evenings we see here end early, on foot, with somebody eating soup in the galley at midnight.

The district

What Ankerplass is actually like

The strip is one long street and two side lanes. Restaurants and bars run along most of it, the concert hall sits in the middle, and the casino entertainment district occupies the north end near the old customs house.

It is compact, well lit, and busy without being overwhelming, which is why casino tourism here tends to attract people who want an evening out rather than a weekend inside one building. You can walk the whole strip in twelve minutes.

Every venue is independently owned and licensed. We have no financial connection to any of them, receive nothing for mentioning them, and cannot make reservations on your behalf beyond telling you which number to call.

Two practical casino travel tips from the desk: carry photographic identification, because every gaming room on the strip checks it without exception, and settle on a finish time before you leave the house. Both make the evening better.

Things that save an email

House position. No wagering on this website. No claims about winning. Photo identification at the card room door, every time, and nobody under eighteen. Rooms and play are never sold together.

Some of the best casino experiences guests describe to us afterwards lasted about an hour: a few hands, a drink, and an early walk home along the quay. Short is not a failure. It is usually the point.
